HOW TO USE THE WORD GENERO

MY SON-IN-LAW: POSSESSIVES

Use mio genero to say my son-in-law. This is an exception to the Italian rule about possessives.

Usually possessives in Italian also require the direct article (the). For example: il mio amico means my (male) friend. However, family members are a big exception.

Do not use the direct article with the SINGULAR, unaltered nouns of most family members. If there is an adjective before or after the family member, use the article. Also, use the article with the possessive loro.

So:

mio genero is my son-in-law
tuo genero is your son-in-law (informal you)
suo genero is his/her/your son-in-law (formal you)
nostro genero is our son-in-law
vostro genero your son-in-law (plural you)

But:

Il loro genero is their son-in-law
Il mio gentile genero is my kind son-in-law

Ho comprato questa felpa per mio genero.
I bought this sweatshirt for my son-in-law.
