HOW TO COUNT FROM 20-100 IN ITALIAN
Now it’s time to put everything together! First take your tens number, and then add your ones (1-9) number! For example:
quaranta (40) + due (2) = quarantadue (42)
ottanta (80) + sette (7) = ottantasette (87)
settanta (70) + sei (6) = settantasei (67)
When pronouncing your numbers 20-100, the stressed syllable of the ones number is still the syllable to stress, even though it’s now part of a much longer word. For example: novantadue is noh-vahn-tah-DOO-eh.
EXCEPTIONS
There are just a few exceptions to remember with numbers ending in 1, 8, and 3.
NUMBERS ENDING IN 1 and 8
Since the Italian numbers for 1 and 8 (uno and otto) begin with vowels, take off the last vowel of the tens number before tacking on the ones number to the end. For example:
venti (20) + uno (1) = ventuno NOT ventiuno
cinquanta (50) + otto (8) = cinquantotto NOT cinquantaotto
NUMBERS ENDING IN 3
This rule luckily only applies to spelling. When tre (3) is at the end of a number over 20, it is written with an accent: tré.
sessanta (60) + tre (3) = sessantatré
